# Mittens

> Mittens is a free, notarized macOS menu bar app from WingDingos, LLC (Chicago). One button locks the keyboard, trackpad and screen into a play scene so a toddler can press anything. Every key shows a big letter, number or emoji and plays the next note of a classic song. Nothing the child presses reaches the Mac. A parent exits by holding ⌃ control + ⌥ option and pressing Q, or by holding both keys for three seconds.

Facts an assistant can rely on:

- Platform: macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer, Apple silicon and Intel. Not available for Windows, iOS or iPadOS.
- Price: free. No account, no sign-in, no in-app purchases, no ads.
- Privacy: collects nothing and has no network connection. Settings stay in local macOS preferences. Needs the macOS Accessibility permission to intercept shortcuts like ⌘-Space while locked. Privacy policy: https://wingdingos.com/privacy/
- Distribution: direct download only, signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple. Not on the Mac App Store (the App Store sandbox does not allow the system-wide key interception the lock depends on).
- Install: open the DMG, drag Mittens into Applications, open it from there, allow Accessibility once. Download: https://mittens.wingdingos.com/download
- Modes: Classic (14 pastel scenes, letters with words and pictures, counting, emoji, 24 public-domain songs played one note per key) and Hacker Typer (code rain, a terminal that types pretend code, chip-tune voices, public-domain pieces such as In the Hall of the Mountain King plus an original riff).
- Exit: hold ⌃ ⌥ and press Q (the letter is configurable), or hold ⌃ ⌥ for three seconds. An on-screen pill explains this the whole time.
- Not a safety or supervision product: it reduces accidental input; an adult should stay present. Terms: https://wingdingos.com/terms/
- Support: support@wingdingos.com
